Pathology involving the skull base and adjacent soft tissues present a challenge to all physicians dealing with the anatomy of this region. The goal of Skull Base Surgery: Basic Techniques is to provide the surgeon with a descriptive, step by step, pictorial analysis of skull base surgical techniques. Emphasis is placed on the most commonly used and applicable procedures that address the majority of the pathology encountered in standard practice. This beautifully illustrated text is directed to be the most useful for individuals new to these methods, surgical trainees and mid-level practitioners. Additionally, it’s likely to be useful to physicians outside of otolaryngology and neurosurgery involved in the care of these patients. It provides a description of the key components of the medical management of these cases preoperatively and postoperatively so as to maximize the opportunity for successful outcomes.
About The Authors
Charles E. Moore, MD, FACS is a graduate of Harvard Medical School. He completed a general surgery internship and otolaryngology residency at the University of Michigan. During his residency he did a 1 year fellowship through NIH. After his residency, he completed fellowship training in Craniomaxillofacial Cranial Base Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery at the University of Michigan. His research interests focus on craniomaxillofacial trauma, cancer related health disparity, and treatment modalities for skullbase tumors. He serves on the faculty of the Otolaryngology Department at Emory University. He is also Chief of Service in the Department of Otolaryngology at Grady Memorial Hospital in Atlanta, Georgia.
Jeffrey J. Olson, MD, FACS serves on the faculty of the Neurosurgery Department at Emory University in Atlanta, GA. He obtained his M.D. at the University of Minnesota in Minneapolis and did his neurosurgical residency at the University of Iowa in Iowa City. Thereafter he did a 3 year fellowship with the Surgical Neurology Branch of the NINDS, NIH. His research emphasis is on the use of new and promising therapies for brain tumors in preclinical models with subsequent application in humans. Funded research includes participation in national clinical research groups, regional epidemiologic studies and a study imaging of synthetic amino acids specially suited for tracking brain tumors and their response to treatment.
