About The Book

This text is the author’s thoughtful and effective response to preschool educators’ and speech language pathologists’ frustrations in meeting the needs of the Hispanic family. It will be a positive contribution to our understanding of Hispanic families and their children. This text is primarily a literature review, but the majority of people who know Hortencia Kayser, know that she has stories of families that have succeeded through the efforts of practicing bilingual and monolingual clinicians. Evidence based practice is the key-phrase for the profession, but the experiences of clinicians in the field are important examples and contributions to our knowledge of how clinicians can best serve Hispanic clients. The chapters are reader-friendly, with subheadings, valuable tables, photos, side glossaries, brief summaries, resources for further reading and brief case studies as exemplars.


About The Author

Dr. Kayser is a Professor in the Department of Communication Sciences and Disorders at Saint Louis University. She received her bachelor’s and master’s degrees from the University of Arizona and earned a doctorate from New Mexico State University. She also completed a three-year post-doctoral fellowship at the University of Arizona’s National Center for Neurogenic Communication Disorders. She is a Fellow of the American Speech-Language- Hearing Association and received the ASHA award for Recognition in Contributions to Multicultural Affairs. Dr. Kayser has written extensively in the areas of assessment and treatment of Latino children. Her career focus has been to educate monolingual and bilingual speech language pathologists about the issues concerning assessment and treatment of Latino children. Her career has been a mission and a passion for children and she is highly respected by clinicians across the country.
