About The Authors

Dr. Myers is Distinguished Professor and Emeritus Chair of the Department of Otolaryngology at the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine. He is internationally recognized as a leader in the field of head and neck surgery. He was Principal Investigator of the Oral Cavity Cancer Center of Discovery sponsored by the National Institute of Dental and Craniofacial Research (NIH). This was funded for $11,000,000 over a 5-year period.

Dr. Myers served as President of the American Board of Otolaryngology, the American Academy of Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery, the American Society of Head and Neck Surgery, the American Laryngological Association and the Pan American Association of Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery. He is an Honorary Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinborough and the National Societies of 20 countries.

Dr. Myers served as Coordinator for International Affairs of the American Academy of Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery and was International Editor of Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery. He is a member of the Editorial Board of the AMA Archives of Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery, Head and Neck, and 13 international journals. Cancer of the Head and Neck (4th ed, Elsevier) coauthored with James Y. Suen, MD is considered a classic in the field. He is co-editor of the book Salivary Gland Disorders (Springer) with Robert L. Ferris, MD, PhD. He is also Editor of Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery (2nd ed, Elsevier).

Jonas T. Johnson is professor of otolaryngology at the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine where he holds a joint appointment as professor of Radiation Oncology. He is also professor of oral maxillofacial surgery in the School of Dental Medicine. Dr. Johnson limits his clinical practice to the treatment of patients with tumors of the head and neck as well as the diagnosis and therapy of snoring and obstructive sleep apnea.

Dr. Johnson serves as chairman of the Department of Otolaryngology where he is also the Residency Program Director. He is presently the Eugene N. Myers, M.D., Chair in Otolaryngology.

Dr. Johnson was an undergraduate at Dartmouth College. He earned his medical degree at SUNY Upstate Medical Center. He later completed his residency at the same institution.

Dr. Johnson has developed his research around the care of patients with cancer of the head and neck. He has special interest and expertise in the management of patients with carcinoma of the upper aerodigestive tract as well as neoplasia of the salivary apparatus and thyroid surgery. He has a major interest in the management of cervical metastasis, surgical therapy for early laryngeal cancer, and adjuvant therapy for advanced head and neck cancer. In 1980, a prospective database of all patients treated for head and neck cancer was established at the University of Pittsburgh. This allowed for an extended period of practice-based learning, which resulted in the publications of over 340 manuscripts in the peer-reviewed literature. Additionally, Dr. Johnson has contributed 144 chapters to textbooks and edited or co-edited 17 texts.

Dr. Johnson is a past president of the American Academy of Otolaryngology–Head and Neck Surgery (2003) and the American Head and Neck Society (2004). He currently serves as editor of the Laryngoscope.
